02. THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE

TIRED OF THE HURT AND THE HURTING
(Mar - Apr ‘21)

CARD MEANING

Upright: good luck, life cycles, karma, a turning point

Reverse: bad luck, resistance to change, breaking cycles

WORDS

The phrase “TIRED OF THE HURT AND THE HURTING” focuses on the dual interpretation of the word “tired.” There are two common meanings:

1. tired as a state of being, when we succumb to fatigue and give in to exhaustion
2. so tired of our circumstances that we are inspired to action; enough is enough

Every day I face this battle between fatigue and resolve. With this ism, I lean into the repetitive and cyclical pattern of hurt. The ways in which I’ve been hurt tend to be the ways I lash out at others. After generations of trauma passed down in this manner, I am tired of the predictability and the pain, and this is the cycle I so desperately hope to break.

BOTANICALS

Slithering along the left side of the wheel, Typhon, the Egyptian god of evil, is a snakelike figure in traditional tarot. Anubis, the Egyptian god of death, is the jackal-faced creature tracing the right side. Atop the wheel sits the Sphinx: strong, all-knowing, and courageous.

Thorn apple/Datura (Typhon): Known as the devil’s herb, the thorn apple is indicative of deceitful charm.

Asphodel (Anubis): A flower frewuently used as a representation of death.

Edelweiss (Sphinx): An emblem of noble courage.

Egyptian lotus (wheel): Longtime symbol of resurrection and immortality. Every night, the lotus closes its petals, sinks below the water, and rises up the next day to greet the world once again. In Chinese culture, it is also considered an emblem of the Past, Present, and Future, as it contains buds, blossoms, and seed pods simultaneously on one plant.
